LET'S FACE IT: THERE'S A BIG GAP IN THE TRAINING & SUPPORT THAT THERAPIST'S RECEIVE
Have you noticed that there seems to be a gap in the training and support that therapists experience?
New therapists often feel over their heads, are burdened by imposter syndrome, and are aware that they may lack the skills needed to be effective and successful.
And even experienced or veteran therapists often feel undertrained, inconsistently effective, burned out, or confused about what the work "should" look and feel like.
If you are a therapist in the field, or want to become one, you might be wondering how the heck people become "good enough" therapists to open and maintain a successful private practice, to be truly effective with their clients, to stay healthy and invigorated, and to provide the transformations their clients desire.
Therapists have an innate drive to help others in the most effective way possible.
Yet, they are often left wondering how and where
they can truly level-up their skills to become the absolute best therapists they can be.

WHAT TRAINING DO THERAPISTS CURRENTLY RECIEVE?
People who eventually become counselors or therapists learn the basics in school, and then often have to rely on their field placements in graduate school, their first jobs, and their supervisors to help them develop their craft. Let's take a look at
-Graduate School provides essential & foundational learning, but is not great a providing experiential practice. Therapeutic theories and modalities are taught, but are often not practiced . Students are not taught experientially through rigorous practice, which is one of the only ways to truly learn how to be an effective counselor. how Therapists are typically left to learn on their own in agencies or practices, often leaving them without foundational skills, missing the most effective techniques, and without skillful awareness of how to navigate resistance/ challenging clients/retention issues/countertransference/uninspiring sessions/

-CEU's provide great information, but often don't enable you to actually integrate and practice what you have learned. CEU's provide essential information and data, but do not help people turn that information info intelligence. Even post-graduate certificate programs may provide immersive training, but afterwards you may feel alone in the integration of the material.
-Clinical Supervision can provide fabulous support, but is not frequent or thorough enough to help you actually learn and practice techniques. As we all know, Clinical Supervision in most agency settings is often conducted by non-clinicians, has a heavy focus on admin content, and mostly about managing crisis (not developing Clinical proficiency). Even if you were lucky enough to be assigned a Clinical Supervisor that is actually a therapist, supervision sessions are often too short and infrequent to help therapists really practice their craft.

HOW A LACK OF EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING & PRACTICE IMPACTS THERAPISTS... AND THE FIELD
The lack of regular, supportive training after graduate school often leads to
Shame ("I should be better than this!")
Burnout ("Why aren't my techniques working?", "Why is this client resisting change!?" )
Imposter syndrome ("Do I even really know what I am doing?" "Who am I to be a therapist? I'm a mess!")
Loss of Productivity ("I'm so glad my client cancelled today")
Low Confidence
Fatigue and low energy
Trouble Retaining Clients
Feeling intermittently successful
Bad habits that may be backfiring
Disorganized sessions
Lack of client progress
Trouble knowing who you are as a therapist
Running an unsuccessful counseling business that not lucrative, steady, or structured
Many therapists in the field that are underexperienced, lack boundaries, or are only moderating effective

LACKING CONFIDENCE OR LACKING SKILL?
Therapists who lack confidence almost always lack actual skill. Therapists have a very significant and important job- they are driven to want to help people through their hardest challenges and help clients achieve emotional, mental, and practical success. The depth of skill required to help clients transform their lives is extraordinary, and yet most therapists have not received this level of training.
Healthy therapists will take a dialectical approach when it comes to being under -or over- confident. This means improving confidence by affirming their strengths and focusing on what they do well AND recognizing that they may need more support and training to truly be effective. This willing approach can be refreshing and liberating.
GREAT THERAPISTS ARE GREAT STUDENTS: THEY NEVER STOP LEARNING & GROWING
By nature, therapists love self growth and "geek out" about all of the ways we can help others and ourselves to be our best. It's in the therapists blood to never stop learning and growing. The question we might ask ourselves is: where and how can I get the support, training, information, and practice to actually grow into the best therapist I can be?

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
There is no substitute to experiential learning for any therapist that actually wants to be great at their craft. We MUST practice with each other in safe, non-judgmental, fun environments. We MUST learn from experienced teachers who cn guide us while also learning from each other. This practice can help us tap into our natural strengths, realize what we do well while also improving our short comings, correct unhealthy habits, help us to learn new techniques, and allow us to practice these skills together so that new approaches actually become familiar and easily accessible. Without experiential learning, it's like therapists are reading about how to lift weights instead of actually going to the gym so that they become stronger.
