Mother’s Day is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate all the love our mother’s have given us, and also to BE celebrated as mothers.
But what is Mother’s Day is bittersweet…or even painful for you?
Many people have challenging relationships with their mothers. After all, when a woman become a mother it doesn’t simply eliminate their mental health issues, addictions, or any number other challenges that can make a mother less than ideal. In fact, having children often magnifies these issues.
If you are feeling challenged by your experiences with your mother, reach out to us here at Positive Energy Holistic Counseling so that we can support you on your journey to feel more free, whole, and able to move forward.
Also, here are some books that might help.
HEALING FROM MOTHER’S WHO WERE UNABLE TO LOVE, NUTURE, or GUIDE
Some adult children still struggle with how their mothers treated them, or are still treating them. They may be left with a feeling of invalidation or “feeling unloved” that hasn’t healed yet. Adults who were neglected, abused, criticized, unsupported, minimized or overshadowed by their mother’s when they were younger may still be trying to feel good enough or safe enough to this day.
While we would always like to forgive our mother’s for their challenges and to accept that “they did the best that they could at the time”, this compassion is not always easy to access.
For those clients, I might suggest they read
HEALING FROM GRIEF BECAUSE YOUR MOTHER PASSED AWAY
Other people may find Mother’s Day to be painful because it’s a reminder that their mother has passed. It can be hard to celebrate your own motherhood, or feel positive about celebrating other mothers, when you are reminded about the loss of your own mother. For those clients, I might suggested
HEALING FROM GRIEF AFTER MISCARRIAGES, A CHILD’S DEATH, INFERTILITY, & INOPPORTUNITY
Still, there are also folks who find Mother’s Day difficult because they are NOT mothers, but would like to be. For these folds, not having had the change to have children, dealing with the death of a child, or experiencing a miscarriage bring up painful feelings on Mother’s Day.
Some of the more popular books that might help with this are
HEALING FROM ADOPTION & LOSS GRIEF
Of course, some people might struggle with grief on Mother’s Day because they have tried to adopt, or were adopted. It can be hard to feel excited for other’s Mother’s Day when you are carrying the confusing feelings of rejection, isolation, or not feeling “good enough.”
Mother’s Day may not be a time for celebration for everyone. If you’re one of those people, it’s okay to take good care of yourself. Honor your painful emotions, and also do something that will make you feel better on Mother’s Day. Perhaps even see your pain on this day as an opportunity to find deeper healing, and invite that healing to deepen within you. Whether you are a Mother or not, and even if you didn’t have a very loving mother, you still deserve to love yourself and be loved.
